The Chinese Academy of Science Visited GCL Silicon
On December 8, 2008, The Chinese Academy of Science sent a Solar Energy Research Team to GCL Silicon to learn more about the dynamics of the solar industry. The team was headed by Mr. Houzhi Tang.

During the meeting, GCL Silicon’s Director of Research and Development, Dr. Zhenwu Zhong, gave a detailed description of the company’s business development with a focus on production process, capacity ramp-up, and sales and production situation. GCL Silicon integrated the hydrochlorination process into its production process which can successfully recycle STC back into TCS. TCS is one of the main raw materials used in the polysilicon production process. The hydrochlorination process was developed internally by GCL Silicon’s engineers and is crucial for the company’s future development as well as ability in maintaining long-term competitiveness. Xuzhou Phase III 10,500 MT polysilicon production facilities will soon begin commercial production. During the ramp up of Xuzhou Phase III, the hydrochlorination process will contribute significantly to the company’s continuous efforts in reducing production cost.

CEO of GCL Silicon, Mr. Hunter Jiang, said, “The current financial crisis does have a significant impact on the supply and demand dynamics of the global solar industry. To remain competitive, GCL Silicon has to continue to develop new technologies, enhance product quality and reduce production cost. At the same time, we hope that The Chinese Academy of Science can give us more assistance and guidance.”

Mr. Houzhi Tang, head of the Solar Energy Research Team of the Chinese Academy of Science, said, “I am impressed by GCL Silicon’s growth and scale. My team will analyze further the policies required to further support the growth of solar companies. Currently, there are quite a few solar companies in China across the entire supply chain. However, solar energy is not yet popular at the end user level. Therefore, it is crucial that we develop more awareness of the benefits of using solar energy at the end user level. GCL Silicon is going in the right direction by increasing investments in research and development and focusing on technology innovation. I hope that solar energy will become increasingly affordable in the future.”
